For the past 10 years, Vykrutas Ukrainian Dance Society has shared the spirit of Ukrainian culture through dance, storytelling, and community. To celebrate this milestone anniversary, Vykrutas is proud to present its most ambitious theatrical production yet: Kotyhoroshko.
Based on one of the most beloved Ukrainian folk tales, Kotyhoroshko is a powerful story of courage, resilience, and the fight for freedom. The tale follows a miraculous young hero born from a pea who rises to defend his people against the terrifying dragon Zmij — a symbol of oppression, destruction, and fear. Though rooted in folklore, the story carries deep meaning today as Ukraine continues its fight for independence and the protection of its people, culture, and homeland.
The inspiration for this production began during the first years of the war, when many Ukrainian families sought refuge in Canada. Vykrutas opened its doors through free summer dance camps for displaced children, helping them reconnect with joy, culture, and community through Ukrainian dance. Among the children’s favorite stories and performances was Kotyhoroshko, inspiring the vision to transform this legendary tale into a full theatrical production.
Through dynamic choreography, dramatic storytelling, larger-than-life characters, and emotional stage moments, Kotyhoroshko will bring audiences on an unforgettable journey through hope, hardship, bravery, and triumph. The production will feature scenes of joyful village life, the arrival of the dragon who enslaves the people, the miraculous birth of Kotyhoroshko, the forging of his mighty weapon, and the final battle where good overcomes evil. The story concludes with a triumphant Ukrainian Hopak celebrating freedom, unity, and victory.
This production is more than a dance show — it is a celebration of Ukrainian identity, strength, and the next generation carrying these traditions forward. As part of Vykrutas’ 10-year anniversary season, auditions for featured roles and main cast dancers will take place at the end of August. We invite passionate performers to become part of this historic production and help bring this legendary story to life on stage.
